Future of Civil Society
Civil society organisations encompass all those in the space between the public sector and the private sector. Civil society organisations range in size from the Cooperative Movement and trades unions to local community and faith groups.
In 2010 the Carnegie UK Trust funded independent Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Civil Society in the UK and Ireland published its far-reaching report: Making Good Society.
The Commission concluded that it had become impossible to imagine plausible responses to the greatest challenges of our time - including political distrust, economic crisis and climate change - without significant input from civil society.
The Commission articulates the importance of civil society in all spheres of life, and identifies four critical areas in which civil society activity is necessary to make good society. These key themes were:
- Growing a more civil economy
- A rapid and just transition to a low carbon economy
- Democratising media ownership and content
- Growing participatory and deliberative democracy
A series of publications
were produced alongside Making Good Society
which investigate these key themes.
