The Trust will be publishing the outcomes of our research into public libraries in early May. The full report of our research and our review of the literature and policy context will be published on-line. At the same time we will publish a short discussion paper and five factsheets containing more detail of the research outcomes in each of the five jurisdictions covered by the Trust.

In February we launched the findings of our research study to explore rural development networks within the UK and Ireland. Rural development networks play an important role in building community capacity. However, within the current climate of austerity and public spending cuts, they and the communities they represent are presented with a challenging future.

On 6 February the Trust launched ‘Better Journalism in the Digital Age’, written by Carnegie Fellow Blair Jenkins. This new report sets out 7 key recommendations to deliver better news media in the UK – including a call for a new, single code of conduct for all journalists to aspire to, and a proposal for a new, non-statutory independent press regulator with strong incentives to join. The report also includes recommendations around journalist training, the funding of news media organisations, and improving access to digital technology.

The Carnegie UK Trust is one of a small number of organisations whose remit includes the Republic of Ireland as well as the UK. Our Trustees were keen to engage with stakeholders in Ireland to help us develop our strategic plan.

Carnegie UK has a long-established interest in ‘sub-city’ communities, whether rural villages or commuter belt conurbations. This year, the Trust will be focusing much of its work on understanding and promoting wellbeing specifically in towns.

The Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Albert Tucker as a Carnegie Associate for 2012. Albert will be supporting the policy team on the Global Rules, Local Rulers project this year, and will be chairing discussion events looking at this work in London and New York in June.

The Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Richard Kerley as a Carnegie Associate for 2012. Professor Kerley will be carrying out research into Scottish Charities and Constitutional Change. While the Carnegie UK Trust does not have a position on independence, it is clear that any decision will have profound implications for Scottish civil society.
