Carnegie UK Trust has long championed the work of rural communities across the UK and Ireland.  Our report, A Charter for Rural Communities was published in June 2007.  This new publication, A Manifesto for Rural Communities, builds upon the vision provided in the Charter but acknowledges the accelerating pace of economic and social change.  Here we set out some very positive opportunities for rural communities (and indeed communities everywhere) to survive and thrive during what are proving to be turbulent times.

This report explores how civil society associations (CSAs) understand and operationalise the concept of social justice. In addition, it considers what distinguishes CSAs from organisations in the public and private sectors and the obstacles civil society associations encounter in operating as social justice organsations.

The Rural Programme helps rural communities across the UK and Ireland to respond to and influence social, environmental and economic change. We work to ensure that rural priorities are fully recognised by decision-makers.

This practical report takes an in-depth look into community-led service provision in rural areas.  It concludes a three year action research project by Carnegie partners, Atlantis Leisure.  Based on their experience of running an extremely successful community enterprise, the study examines the background of Atlantis leisure as well as three other case studies- Shannon Swimming and Leisure Centre, Chipping and District Memorial Hall and Kilwinning Sports Club. 

The rural strand of the recent Community Land Trust National Demonstration Programme was funded by Carnegie UK Trust, the Housing Corporation and the Commission for Rural Communities. This report, published April 2008 and launched at the 2008 National CLT conference, forms the final output of the programme.

This report has been developed as part of the Carnegie UK Trust’s interest in how civil society associations apply and engage with power and influence. The report tells the stories of four recent policy decisions and examines the role of civil society associations in influencing the decision.

This report analyses the drivers of change and how they might affect civil society, looking out to 2025. Drivers of change are forces (social, technological, economic, environmental, political or organisational) that may affect civil society for good or ill. Drawing on the findings of the report 'The shape of civil society to come', this report describes a number of scenarios that are designed to illustrate what the future might hold for civil society, looking out to 2025. The purpose of the scenarios are to stimulate further deliberation about what actions might need to be taken now to take advantage of emerging opportunities or diminish possible threats to civil society.
