The Carnegie UK Trust has today announced that it is open for applications for the second round of ‘Carnegie Library Lab’, a programme designed to support and develop innovation and leadership in the public library sector across the UK and Ireland. The first cohort of Carnegie Library Lab participants began the programme in November 2014. This second cohort will take part from May 2016 to November 2017. The deadline for applications is Friday 29 January 2016.

Martyn Evans, Chief Executive, Carnegie UK Trust, said: ‘These are challenging times for public libraries across the UK – with pressure on their resources and debates about their purpose and role. Innovation and leadership are important components for ensuring public libraries thrive within their local communities in the future, continuing to be an essential source for learning and information and contributing towards community wellbeing. Carnegie Library Lab is giving individuals in Public Libraries across the UK and Ireland the opportunity to access funding, learning and mentoring to help libraries utilise their space in new ways and develop staff and their service –and how they deliver it’.

Carnegie Library Lab is overseen by an expert Advisory Group. Its members comprise of senior representatives from Society of Chief Librarians, CILIP, Arts Council England, MALD Welsh Government, Libraries NI, and Libraries Development Ireland.

The Advisory Group and Trust are looking for applicants in early or mid-management roles that have an innovative idea that they would like to implement or develop in their library, and who have a commitment to self-development and collaborative working.

Successful applicants, who will be known as Carnegie Partners, will get £5,000-£15,000 to implement their innovative idea, access to an online learning programme, a mentor and learning guide, and the opportunity to take part in a new network of library innovators with their fellow Carnegie Partners. Partners will begin their journey with the Trust from May 2016 through to October 2017.

To enter, individuals working in the public library service should complete the application form with reference to the application notes and FAQs that can be found here.
