‘Housing is more than just bricks and mortar’

Late last year, the Carnegie UK Trust ran an open survey, asking for evidence from around the globe on using wellbeing in policy and practice.
We are pleased to announce that the Housing Association Charitable Trust (HACT) has been selected as the survey winner. As the UK housing sector’s ideas and innovation agency, HACT have developed a wellbeing valuation tool, and are working with housing associations (and others) to help them to better understand their social impact.
HACT view housing through a wellbeing lens, with a ‘belief that the provision of housing is more than just bricks and mortar – that housing providers are at their most successful when they focus on the social value they create, engage with and invest in their communities and actively seek to identify and meet the needs of those who live in them.’
When the survey closed in December 2016, we were impressed with the breadth and calibre of survey responses we received. Responses came in from voluntary organisations, businesses, academics, and governments at all levels, from across the UK and Ireland, and further afield. We received submissions from Denmark, France, the US and Zambia, and one cross-jurisdictional organisation operating in Turkey, Indonesia, China, Ukraine, Lebanon and Croatia.
The responses also demonstrated a real commitment to improving people’s wellbeing. One of the reasons we ran the survey was to uncover evidence of wellbeing in policy and practice that is largely hidden to the international wellbeing community. We wanted to look past statisticians, academics and experts, and find people using wellbeing concepts to affect change. It was heartening to read about all the many programmes that contribute in some way – large or small – to improving wellbeing for individuals and communities, both in the UK and across the globe.
