Stepping into Leadership – online resources for leadership in libraries launched
April 20, 2020
Over the past few weeks, those working in our public libraries have demonstrated their expertise, creativity, and commitment to serving their communities. The sector is also playing a vital role in informing and supporting the public. At this particular moment, it is critical that there is support for public library staff at every level.
The Carnegie UK Trust and CILIP are delighted to launch Stepping into Leadership, new online development materials for leadership and innovation. These are open to all and free to access on CILIP’s website: www.cilip.org.uk/CarnegieLeadership.
Stepping into Leadership covers a range of topics including creativity and innovation; influencing skills and power; systems and complexity; leading transformation; and continuing development. They draw on non-academic sources and input from outside the library sector, yet are clearly framed to resonate within the public library context.
Stepping into Leadership was originally developed as part of the Carnegie UK Trust’s Carnegie Library Lab programme. This programme supported the development of leadership and innovation in the public library sector across the UK and Ireland between 2014 and 2020. It provided project funding; a bespoke online learning programme; mentoring; networking opportunities; and support from external evaluators. The online learning programme has now been adapted as a freely available self-directed learning experience for all.
Sarah Davidson, CEO, Carnegie UK Trust said:
“Running Carnegie Library Lab has been a rich and rewarding experience for the Carnegie UK Trust. We are keen to share the resources we developed as part of the programme to help support and foster leadership throughout the public library sector, and are delighted that they are now available for everyone to use through CILIP’s platform.”
Nick Poole, CEO, CILIP the library and information association said:
“CILIP is delighted to host the Stepping into Leadership programme, it is an invaluable suite of resources to foster leadership skills within the profession and supports a key part of our Workforce Development Strategy 2019-2020. Investing in professionalism and leadership skills and the development of clear career pathways for library and information professionals is a vital part of CILIP’s work and we hope that these resources will be both inspirational and beneficial to the profession.”
Isobel Hunter, Chief Executive, Libraries Connected said:
“Strong, confident and diverse leadership for libraries has never been more important. This resource will be welcomed by library staff keen to develop their skills during the current lockdown, and will complement the development we are offering through our Leading Libraries programme.”
The launch of Stepping into Leadership is accompanied by the publication of two reports on the Carnegie Library Lab programme.
- The Final Project Snapshot from Cohort 3 outlines the key achievements and progress of the six Carnegie Partners who took part in the final round of Carnegie Library Lab.
- Carnegie Library Lab: Reflections on a programme for public libraries shares the benefits and impact of the programme. It also reflects on what the Trust learned from designing and delivering the programme, which we hope is of interest to others considering this type of work with the public library sector.
Stepping into Leadership and Carnegie Library Lab are part of a wider tranche of work with public libraries undertaken by the Carnegie UK Trust.
